Mediaset España and Mediapro have signed a definitive agreement to offer open matches for the Copa del Rey de Fútbol from the quarter-final round, with the broadcast of the first duel between Leganés and Real Madrid on Telecinco on Thursday 18 January from 9:30 p.m.
The television group had acquired, in principle, the broadcast of eight games, which would be seen simultaneously with GOL, Mediapro’s DTT channel dedicated to sport. However, at the beginning of this month of January Mediaset Spain backed off and announced the cancellation of the broadcast, without giving further explanations that “the conditions initially agreed upon” with Mediapro are not met.
Soccer is always synonymous with good audience data and the low hours that Telecinco and other channels of the group experience could have motivated the final decision to offer these Copa del Rey matches.
In addition to the first leg of the quarter-finals, the agreement includes the free broadcast of one of the second-leg quarter-final matches and the four semi-finals (both two-legged).
The next matches, which will feature the participation of Real Madrid, F.C. Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Espanyol, Leganés and Alavés, teams that have passed their respective rounds, will also be offered through Mitele.es and will be narrated by Manu Carreño along with comments from Kiko Narváez.
After reaching an agreement with Mediapro, the group decided to break it and not broadcast the Eighth matches. Now, reconsider and broadcast the two most important quarterfinal matches, and the two semifinal matches (round trip).
Mediaset and Mediapro reached an agreement to broadcast the most important matches of the eighth, quarter-final and semi-final of the Copa del Rey de Fútbol in simulcast with GOL. However, 10 days ago the group published a statement in which it reported that it would not finally broadcast such matches as it considered that “the agreed conditions were not met.”
Now coinciding with the arrival of the quarterfinals, Telecinco has finally decided to broadcast the remaining matches of the competition as planned in the agreement with Mediapro in November. In this way, the Mediaset chain also intends to take advantage of the Copa del Rey audiences to overcome the audiences of the month and get the first place.
